Industrial - grade aluminium sulfate has the chemical formula Al2(SO4)3. Typically, it contains 14 to 18 molecules of water of crystallization, with the common hydrate being Al2(SO4)3·18H2O. This substance exists as a colorless, transparent, block - shaped crystal or a crystalline powder. However, due to the presence of impurities, it may display colors such as gray - white, light - yellow, or light - green. It readily dissolves in water, and its resulting aqueous solution is acidic. When it undergoes hydrolysis, a gelatinous precipitate of aluminium hydroxide is formed.
