Usually, it contains 14 - 18 molecules of water of crystallization, and the common hydrate state is Al2(SO4)3·18H2O. It exists either as a colorless, transparent block - shaped crystal or as a crystalline powder. Nevertheless, because of impurities, its color can range from gray - white, light - yellow to light - green. This substance has a high solubility in water, and its aqueous solution is acidic. During hydrolysis, it generates a gelatinous aluminium hydroxide precipitate.
