Silica, also known as silicon dioxide (SiO2), is one of the most abundant and widely occurring compounds on Earth.
1. Physical Properties
- Appearance: It also commonly appears as a white, powdery substance.
- Hardness: Quartz, a crystalline form of silica, has a relatively high hardness of 7 on the Mohs scale. This makes it useful in applications where abrasion resistance is required.
- Melting Point: Silica has a very high melting point, typically around 1710 °C. This high melting point is due to the strong covalent bonds within its crystal structure.
2. Chemical Properties
- Chemical Stability: Silica is generally chemically stable. It is insoluble in water and most common solvents. However, it can react with strong alkalis, such as sodium hydroxid e (NaOH), to form silicates.
- Acid - Base Reactions: With hydrofluoric aci d (HF), silica reacts vigorously. This reaction is unique as hydrofluoric aci d is one of the few substances that can attack silica. This property is used in the etching of glass, which contains silica.

- Glassmaking: Silica is the main ingredient in glass production. When heated with other substances like soda ash (sodium carbonate) and limestone (calcium carbonate), it forms a molten mixture that can be shaped into various glass products, such as windows, bottles, and optical fibers.
- Ceramics: In the ceramics industry, silica is used to improve the strength, durability, and heat - resistance of ceramic products. It helps to control the shrinkage and expansion of the ceramic body during firing.
- Rubber and Plastics: Silica is added to rubber and plastics as a reinforcing filler. For example, in the production of tires, silica can improve the tire's grip on the road, reduce rolling resistance, and enhance its wear resistance.
- Filtration and Adsorption: Diatomaceous earth, a form of silica, is used in filtration processes, such as in water treatment plants to remove impurities. It can also act as an adsorbent, for example, in the purification of oils and in some industrial waste - treatment applications.
