Characteristics of hexahydrate magnesium chloride:
• Solubility: It is readily soluble in water and ethanol, and its solubility in water increases with temperature. For example, at 0ºC, 52.9g can be dissolved in 100ml of water, and at 100ºC, 73.3g can be dissolved.
• Hygroscopicity: It is prone to deliquescence in humid air, and will effloresce and lose its water of crystallization when placed in dry air.
• Stability: It is stable at room temperature, but will dehydrate when exposed to high temperatures. It will melt and decompose at 116-118ºC, form basic magnesium chloride and hydrogen chloride at temperatures above 170ºC, and decompose into magnesium oxide and hydrogen chloride at 600ºC.
• Taste: It has a bitter and salty taste.
