Magnesium chloride hexahydrate, also known as bischofite, is a common inorganic compound with the chemical formula MgCl2·6H2O. It is a colorless monoclinic crystal that is highly hygroscopic, meaning it readily absorbs moisture from the air. This compound has a density of 1.56 g/cm³ and a melting point of 117°C. When heated, it decomposes in a series of steps, eventually forming magnesium oxide (MgO) and hydrogen chloride (HCl) gas.

The production of magnesium chloride hexahydrate typically involves the concentration and precipitation of sodium chloride crystals from seawater, followed by the extraction of potassium chloride . These tablets are then processed further to obtain the hexahydrate crystals.
