Carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) is a cellulose derivative prepared by reacting cellulose with chloroacetic acid under alkaline conditions. In its chemical structure, the hydroxyl groups of cellulose are substituted by carboxymethyl groups, endowing it with unique physical and chemical properties.
