Application
Potassium alum dodecahydrate is used as a mordant. It can help dyes adhere better to fabrics and improve the fastness of dyeing. During the dyeing process, aluminum ions first combine with fabric fibers, and then dyes combine with aluminum ions, thus forming a bridge connection between fibers and dyes and enabling dyes to be more firmly fixed on fabrics.
In the tanning process, potassium alum dodecahydrate is used as a tanning agent. It can react with collagen in leather, making the leather tougher, more durable, and improving its water resistance. Specifically, aluminum ions combine with the active groups in collagen to form a cross-linked structure between leather fibers, thereby changing the physical and chemical properties of leather.
In the papermaking process, potassium alum dodecahydrate is mainly used as a sizing agent. It can form a protective film with cellulose in paper, reduce the absorption of liquids such as ink by paper, make writing more smooth, and also improve the water resistance of paper. From a chemical perspective, aluminum ions can react with hydroxyl groups (-OH) in cellulose, thereby forming a coating with waterproof properties on the surface of paper fibers.
The generated aluminum hydroxide colloid carries a positive charge, while suspended impurities in water such as soil particles and bacteria generally carry a negative charge. According to the principle of opposite charges attracting, the aluminum hydroxide colloid can adsorb these negatively charged impurities, causing them to gather together to form larger particles and finally settle to the bottom of the water, thereby achieving the purpose of purifying water.
