Magnesium sulfate heptahydrate (MgSO4·7H2O), widely known as Epsom salt, is a colorless or white crystalline compound characterized by needle-like or prismatic structures. With a molecular weight of 246.47 g/mol and a specific gravity of 1.68, this odorless substance exhibits a cooling effect and a slightly bitter taste. It demonstrates excellent solubility in water but is only sparingly soluble in ethanol and glycerol. A unique property of this compound is its ability to dissolve in its own water of crystallization when heated to 67.5°C. Under thermal decomposition, it progressively loses water molecules - shedding four molecules at 70-80°C and becoming completely anhydrous at approximately 200°C. In dry environments, the crystals readily undergo efflorescence, gradually converting to a powdery form. The material's thermal instability contrasts with its chemical safety, as it contains no toxic impurities. These characteristics, particularly its reliable solubility and precise dehydration behavior, make the heptahydrate form preferable to anhydrous magnesium sulfate for industrial applications where accurate dosing and controlled reactions are critical. The compound's consistent performance in aqueous solutions facilitates its widespread use in pharmaceuticals, agriculture, and chemical manufacturing processes that require predictable magnesium ion release.

As a direct source of magnesium and sulfur fertilizers, it is used to correct soil magnesium deficiency (such as leaf yellowing). Magnesium is a core component of chlorophyll, which can promote photosynthesis, improve crop yield and quality, and is especially suitable for cash crops such as citrus, potatoes, and tomatoes. Features: Good water solubility, easy to be absorbed by plants, and more quick-acting than magnesium oxide (MgO).
In the chrome tanning or vegetable tanning process, magnesium sulfate can be used as a pH regulator and a stabilizer for metal tanning agents. It helps tanning agents (such as chromium salts) penetrate more evenly into the leather fibers, thus improving the tanning effect. Its magnesium ions (Mg²) can bind to the carboxyl groups of leather collagen, partially replacing traditional chrome tanning agents and reducing the use of heavy metals, which is in line with the environmental protection trend.
In tanning operations, magnesium sulfate heptahydrate serves as a fiber-distending agent and thermal stabilizer, improving leather's structural integrity and resistance to high-temperature degradation during processing.
As a low-cost auxiliary tanning agent, MgSO4·7H2O helps prevent premature leather hardening while enhancing dimensional stability under heat exposure.
