Calcium hydroxide (chemical formula: Ca(OH)₂) is a white solid that is slightly soluble in water. Its aqueous solution is strongly alkaline and can turn phenolphthalein red.It has the following main properties:
1. Alkalinity: Calcium hydroxide is a strong base, capable of neutralizing acids to form salts and water.
2. Reaction with carbon dioxide: It reacts with carbon dioxide to form calcium carbonate precipitate, which is commonly used for the detection of carbon dioxide.
3. Reaction with acids: It can undergo neutralization reactions with acids to produce corresponding salts and water.
4. Reaction with salts: It reacts with certain soluble salts (such as copper sulfate) to form precipitates.
