Introduction to Chlorosulfonated Polyethylene (CSM)

1. Definition

Chlorosulfonated Polyethylene (CSM), also known as Hypalon, is a synthetic rubber-like thermosetting elastomer. It is derived from high-density polyethylene (HDPE) through chlorination and chlorosulfonation reactions. The introduction of Cl and sulfonyl chloride (SO2Cl) groups into the polyethylene backbone significantly modifies its properties, endowing CSM with excellent chemical resistance, weather resistance, and mechanical strength. These unique characteristics make CSM a versatile material widely used in various industrial applications.

2. Physical and Chemical Properties

  • Physical Properties: CSM typically appears as a white or slightly yellowish powder or granular solid. It has a relatively low density, usually around 1.07 - 1.28 g/cm3. CSM exhibits good elasticity and can be processed into various shapes through methods like extrusion, molding, and calendering. Its hardness can be adjusted during production to meet different application requirements, ranging from 40 to 90 Shore A.
  • Chemical Properties: CSM shows outstanding resistance to a wide range of chemicals. It is highly resistant to acids, alkalis, and solvents. For instance, it can withstand exposure to concentrated HCl and NaOH solutions without significant degradation. CSM also demonstrates excellent weather resistance, maintaining its mechanical properties even after long - term exposure to UV radiation, ozone, and extreme temperatures. Additionally, it has good flame retardancy due to the presence of Cl atoms in its structure.

3. Production Methods

  • Solution Process: In this method, polyethylene is dissolved in an organic solvent such as carbon-tetrachloride. Then, Cl gas and SO2 gas are introduced into the solution under specific reaction conditions, usually at a temperature range of 60 - 100°C and in the presence of a catalyst. The reaction leads to the chlorination and chlorosulfonation of the polyethylene chains. After the reaction, the solvent is removed, and the CSM product is isolated through processes like precipitation and drying.
  • Heterogeneous Process: Here, powdered polyethylene is directly exposed to Cl and SO2 gases in a reactor. The reaction occurs on the surface of the polyethylene particles. This process is simpler and more environmentally friendly as it does not require large amounts of organic solvents. However, it may be more challenging to achieve a uniform distribution of Cl and SO2Cl groups compared to the solution process.

4. Storage Methods

  • Temperature and Humidity: CSM should be stored in a cool, dry place. The recommended storage temperature is between 0 - 30°C. High humidity can cause the absorption of moisture by CSM, which may affect its processing properties. Therefore, storage areas should be well - ventilated to prevent the accumulation of moisture.
  • Avoiding Contamination: CSM should be stored away from chemicals that may react with it, such as strong oxidants, reducing agents, and certain types of solvents. It should also be protected from dust and other particulate matter to ensure its quality and purity during storage.
