Definition
Industrial salt is a type of salt mainly used in industrial production rather than human consumption. It contains a high proportion of sodium chloride, along with other impurities.
Sources
1.Seawater:
A major source. Through evaporation and purification processes, salt can be obtained from seawater, which is rich in various salt - forming substances.
2.Salt Mines: Underground salt deposits are mined. These natural salt formations have accumulated over long geological periods.
Production
1.Solar Evaporation: In areas with sufficient sunlight and suitable climate, seawater or brine is left in large evaporation ponds. Sunlight causes the water to evaporate, leaving behind concentrated salt.
2.Mining and Refining: For salt mines, the salt is extracted and then refined to remove impurities and meet industrial standards.
Applications
1.Chemical Industry: It serves as a basic raw material. For example, in the production of Cl2, NaOH and soda ash (Na2CO3) through the chlor - alkali process.
2.Textile and Dyeing: Used in dyeing and finishing processes to help fix dyes on fabrics and improve color fastness.
3.Metallurgy: In some metal - refining processes, industrial salt can be used to remove impurities and assist in the extraction of metals.
4.Road De-icing: Sprinkled on roads in winter to lower the freezing point of ice and snow, making roads safer.
