Chemical Formula and Composition:
Sodium bicarbonate has the chemical formula NaHCO3. It consists of sodium (Na+) cations and bicarbonate (HCO3-) anions.
Acidity and Basicity:
It is a weak base. In aqueous solution, the bicarbonate ion can react with hydrogen ions (H+). The reaction is as follows: HCO3-+H+→H2O+CO2↑. This property allows it to neutralize acids. For example, when it reacts with HCl, the chemical equation is NaHCO3+HCl→NaCl+H2O+CO2↑.
