Sodium thiosulfate (chemical formula Na2S2O3, often existing as the pentahydrate Na2S2O3.5H2O), commonly known as sodium hyposulfite or hypo, is a colorless and transparent monoclinic crystal. It has a cool touch and a bitter taste, and is easily soluble in water to form a weakly alkaline solution. Its melting point is approximately 48°C, and it decomposes above 100°C. As an important inorganic compound, its thiosulfate ion (S2O3²) endows it with unique chemical properties: it has both reducibility and complexing ability. When it reacts with acids, it decomposes to form elemental sulfur and gas, and it forms stable complexes with silver ions. In the field of photography, it is used as a fixing agent to dissolve unexposed silver halides to fix the image. In analytical chemistry, it is a reference substance for iodometry. In medicine, it is used as an antidote for cyanide poisoning, catalyzed by rhodanese to convert cyanide ions into non-toxic thiocyanates.
In industry, it is used in wastewater treatment to remove heavy metals, textile dechlorination, and leather tanning. When storing, it should be sealed and stored in a cool and dry place, away from acidic substances to prevent decomposition and generation of toxic gases or affecting its purity due to weathering.
