Description:	The chemical formula of industrial - grade aluminium sulfate is Al2(SO4)3. It usually contains 14 - 18 water of crystallization, and the common hydrate form is Al2(SO4)3.18H2O. It is a colorless, transparent, block - like crystal or crystalline powder. It appears gray - white, light - yellow, or light - green due to impurities. It is easily soluble in water, and its aqueous solution is acidic. Hydrolysis produces a gelatinous precipitate of aluminium hydroxide.

Application

It is used as a water - purifying agent in water treatment. The aluminium hydroxide colloid produced by the hydrolysis of aluminium sulfate can adsorb suspended particles in water, such as silt, organic matter, and bacteria, causing them to aggregate into larger particles and settle down, thus achieving the purpose of purifying water quality.

 

It can effectively reduce the turbidity of water and also has a certain removal effect on some heavy metal ions in water.

 

It is an important sizing agent in the paper - making industry. It can combine with cellulose in paper to form a protective film, preventing the paper from absorbing water and thus improving the water - resistance of the paper. At the same time, aluminium sulfate can also be used as a precipitant for paper, used to precipitate impurities and suspended substances generated during the papermaking process, making the paper whiter and smoother.
