Aluminum sulfate is a widely used inorganic compound with the chemical formula Al2(SO4)3. It exists in various forms, including anhydrous and hydrated salts. The most common hydrated form is Al2(SO4)3·18H2O. It is typically found as a white crystalline solid or powder and is highly soluble in water, forming acidic solutions.
Aluminum sulfate is a widely used industrial reagent that is often confused with alum. It is commonly used as a coagulant in the purification of drinking water and wastewater treatment facilities, as well as in the papermaking industry. In its natural state, aluminum sulfate rarely exists as an anhydrous salt. Instead, it forms a series of hydrates, among which aluminum sulfate octadecahydrate (Al2(SO4)3·18H2O) is the most common. Aluminum sulfate is also an effective molluscicide, capable of killing the Spanish slug.

1. Water Treatment:
• Used as a coagulant to remove impurities and clarify drinking water and wastewater. It helps neutralize charges and promotes particle collision, forming larger particles that can be easily filtered out.
2. Paper Industry:
• Added to pulp to improve fiber bonding and enhance paper strength. It also acts as a sizing agent to increase the paper's resistance to water.
3. Dyeing and Textiles:
• Used as a mordant to fix dyes onto fabrics, ensuring better color retention and durability.
4. Construction:
• Acts as an accelerator in concrete, speeding up the hardening process and improving the strength of the final product.
5. Firefighting:
• Used as a foaming agent in fire-extinguishing foams to create a barrier that helps in extinguishing fires.
6. Food Industry:
• Used as a clarifying agent in the production of certain foods, such as syrups and oils.
