1. General Information

2. Physical Properties
- Appearance: It presents as a pure white powder, which gives it a clean and distinct look.

- Solubility: Slightly soluble in water, forming a saturated solution known as limewater.

3. Chemical Properties
- Alkalinity: It is a strong base. It can react with acids to form salts and water in typical neutralization reactions. For example, when reacting with HCl, it produces calcium chloride CaCl2 and water H2O.
- Reactivity with Carbon Dioxide: It reacts with carbon dioxide CO2 in the air. This reaction results in the formation of calcium carbonate CaCO3, which is the principle behind the hardening of lime-based mortars.

4. Production
- It is typically produced by adding water to calcium oxide (quicklime) CaO. This exothermic reaction, known as slaking, is highly efficient and yields calcium hydroxide. The chemical equation is CaO + H2O = Ca(OH)2.

5. Storage
- It should be stored in a dry place, away from sources of moisture and carbon dioxide. Moisture can cause caking, and exposure to carbon dioxide can lead to the formation of calcium carbonate, reducing its effectiveness. Store it in a well-sealed container to maintain its quality.
