agnesium chloride hexahydrate (MgCl2·6H2O) has the following characteristics:Physical properties:• Appearance: It is usually a colorless or white crystalline solid, in the form of columns or needles. Industrial products may sometimes be yellowish-brown due to impurities.• Solubility: It is highly soluble in water, and its solubility increases with rising temperature. The grams dissolved in 100 milliliters of water at different temperatures are as follows: 52.9g at 0ºC, 53.6g at 10ºC, 54.6g at 20ºC, 55.8g at 30ºC, 57.5g at 40ºC, 61g at 60ºC, 66.1g at 80ºC, 69.5g at 90ºC, and 73.3g at 100ºC. In addition, it is also soluble in ethanol.• Hygroscopicity: It has strong hygroscopic properties, easily absorbing moisture from the air and deliquescing in environments with high relative humidity. In dry air, it will effloresce and lose its water of crystallization.• Density: The relative density is 1.569.• Melting point and decomposition: The melting point is around 117ºC. It will thermally melt and decompose at 116ºC to 118ºC. When heated to 100ºC, it loses its water of crystallization, and at high temperatures, it decomposes to form magnesium oxide and hydrogen chloride.Chemical properties:• Hydrolysis reaction: In water, it undergoes hydrolysis, producing magnesium hydroxide and hydrochloric acid, which makes the solution slightly acidic.• Reaction with alkalis: It can react with alkalis to form a precipitate of magnesium hydroxide. For example, the reaction equation with sodium hydroxide is: MgCl2 + 2NaOH = Mg(OH)2↓ + 2NaCl.• Poor thermal stability: It easily loses its water of crystallization when heated, and further decomposes to form magnesium oxide and hydrogen chloride.
