Application

In the paper industry's pulping operations, sodium sulfite serves as a frequently employed cooking additive. It reacts chemically with lignin, breaking the bonds that hold lignin within plant fibers. This reaction enables the separation of lignin from the plant fibers, thus facilitating the production of cellulose pulp with a relatively high degree of purity.
Sodium sulfite also plays a crucial role in safeguarding printed and dyed fabrics against oxidation and color alteration during their subsequent processing or storage. Fabrics are highly vulnerable to the oxygen present in the air. Once exposed, they readily engage in oxidation reactions, which often result in fading or discoloration. Acting as an antioxidant, sodium sulfite intervenes by reacting with the oxygen in the environment. By consuming this oxygen, it creates a protective shield around the fabrics, preserving their original colors.
