Trisodium phosphate (TSP) is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula Na3PO4.
Physical properties:
• Appearance: It is typically a white powder or granular solid.• Density: 2.536 g/cm³ (at 17.5°C).
• Melting point: 1340°C.• Solubility: It is highly soluble in water, with a solubility of approximately 14.5 g/100 mL water at 20°C. Its aqueous solution is strongly alkaline, with a pH value ranging from 11.5 to 12.5. It is insoluble in ethanol and carbon disulfide.
• Vapor pressure: 0 Pa at 20°C.
• Hygroscopicity: It is hygroscopic and readily absorbs moisture from the air.
Chemical properties:
• Alkalinity: The aqueous solution of trisodium phosphate is strongly alkaline and can neutralize acidic substances.
• Stability: It is stable at high temperatures and does not decompose easily.
• Chelation: It can form stable complexes with metal ions (such as calcium and magnesium) and is commonly used in water treatment to remove hardness components from water.
