Aluminum sulfate

Aluminum sulfate is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula Al2(SO4)3 and a molecular weight of 342.15. It is a white crystalline powder.

In the papermaking industry, it is used as a precipitating agent for rosin gum, wax emulsion and other sizing agents. In water treatment, it serves as a flocculant. It can also be used as a retention agent in foam fire extinguishers, as a raw material for manufacturing alum and aluminum white, as a decolorizing and deodorizing agent for petroleum, and as a raw material for drugs. Additionally, it can be used to produce artificial gemstones and high-grade ammonium alum.

Application Scenarios of Aluminium Sulfate

1. Water treatment field

Water purifying agent: As a flocculant, it is used in waterworks and sewage treatment plants. By neutralizing the charge of colloidal particles, it causes them to settle, thereby removing suspended solids, colloids and some organic matter from water.

Phosphorus remover: It is used in industrial wastewater treatment for phosphorus removal by chemical precipitation method, especially suitable for wastewater containing phosphate (such as agricultural and food processing wastewater).

2. Papermaking industry

Sizing agent: Used in combination with rosin soap as an acidic sizing agent, it enhances the water resistance and strength of paper (a traditional process, now gradually being replaced by neutral sizing).

Filler retention agent: Enhances the combination of fibers and fillers and reduces loss.

3. Chemical Engineering and Dyes

Mordant: It is used to fix dye molecules in textile printing and dyeing, improving color fastness and dyeing uniformity (especially suitable for natural fibers such as cotton and wool).

4. Agricultural applications

Soil conditioner: Regulates the pH value of alkaline soil, especially suitable for acid-loving crops (such as blueberries and tea trees).

Nitrogen-fixing enhancer: Used in combination with urea to reduce ammonium volatilization.

Catalyst carrier: An acidic catalyst used in certain organic synthesis reactions.
