Magnesium sulfate heptahydrate (molecular formula MgSO4·7H2O), also known as sulfite, Epsom salt, etc., is a white or colorless needle-like or oblique columnar crystal, odorless, cool and slightly bitter. It has a molecular weight of 246.47 and a specific gravity of 1.68. It is soluble in water, slightly soluble in ethanol and glycerol, and soluble in its own crystal water at 67.5 ºC. When heated, it decomposes. Four molecules of crystal water are lost at 70 - 80 ºC, and all crystal water is lost at about 200 ºC to become anhydrous. It is easily weathered into powder in dry air. When heated, the crystal water is gradually removed and turns into anhydrous magnesium sulfate. It contains no toxic impurities. Due to its solubility characteristics, it is easier to weigh than anhydrous magnesium sulfate, facilitating quantitative control in industry.

 1.In the leather industry, magnesium sulfate is used as a filling reinforcement agent to enhance heat resistance.
 2.In printing and dyeing applications, magnesium sulfate can be used as a fabric dyeing agent, weighting agent, and mordant to ensure uniform dyeing with a pH value between 6 and 7.
3. In the application of fireproof materials, magnesium sulfate is used as a flame retardant for plastics such as acrylic resin.

 

4. In the field of papermaking, magnesium sulfate is used as a synthetic additive for ABS and PVC resins.
5. In organic chemicals, magnesium sulfate can be used as a desiccant and dehydrating agent, used in printing and dyeing of thin cotton cloth and silk, as well as as as a weighting agent for cotton silk and a filler for kapok products.
