- Definition
Magnesium sulfate heptahydrate, with the chemical formula MgSO4·7H2-O, is a hydrated inorganic compound. The term "heptahydrate" signifies that each unit of magnesium sulfate is bonded with seven molecules of water of crystallization. Commonly known as Epsom salt, it exists as colorless, crystalline solids. - Physical and Chemical Properties
Physical Properties: It has a molar mass of around 246.47 g/mol. Highly soluble in water, at 20°C, approximately 26.9 g can dissolve in 100 mL of water. The crystals have a specific gravity of about 1.68, are odorless, and possess a bitter - saline taste. When heated, it loses its water molecules in stages. Starting at 48°C, it begins to dehydrate and transforms into anhydrous magnesium sulfate at 150°C.
Chemical Properties: In aqueous solutions, magnesium sulfate heptahydrate dissociates into magnesium (Mg2+) and sulfate (SO42-) ions. It participates in chemical reactions, such as forming precipitates with certain metal hydroxides. For example, reacting with NaOH produces magnesium hydroxide precipitate and sodium sulfate.

Natural Extraction: Abundant natural sources like brines and salt lakes are key to its production. Through evaporation, either by solar energy in large ponds or mechanical means, the brine concentration increases. As water evaporates, magnesium sulfate heptahydrate crystals form, which are then separated, washed, and dried.
Chemical Synthesis: It can be manufactured by reacting magnesium - containing compounds such as magnesium oxide, hydroxide, or carbonate with sulfuric acid. For instance, MgO + H2-SO4 + 6H2-O → MgSO4·7H2-O, where chemical reactions convert raw materials into the desired product
