Heavy soda ash, also known as dense soda ash, is primarily composed of sodium carbonate (Na2CO3). It is an anhydrous compound that appears as fine white granules, with a relatively high density, typically ranging from 1000 to 1200 kg/m³. Heavy soda ash is produced by hydrating (adding crystal water) or compressing light soda ash (light alkali), resulting in a higher bulk density and better physical stability.
Chemical Properties
• Solubility in Water: Heavy soda ash is highly soluble in water. Its aqueous solution is strongly alkaline (with a pH of approximately 11.6) and can undergo neutralization reactions with acids to produce corresponding salts and carbon dioxide.
• Stability: It is relatively stable at room temperature but can decompose into sodium oxide and carbon dioxide at high temperatures. When exposed to air for extended periods, it absorbs carbon dioxide and moisture, gradually converting into sodium bicarbonate.
