PolyAcrylamide- (PAM) is a synthetic linear polymer formed by the polymerization of Acrylamide- monomers. It exists in various forms, including non-ionic, anionic, and cationic types, which are distinguished by the degree of hydrolysis and the presence of charged groups. This versatility allows PAM to be applied in a wide range of industries for different purposes, mainly due to its excellent flocculation, thickening, and adhesive properties.
Physical and Chemical Properties
Physically, PAM typically appears as a white powder or a transparent, viscous liquid. The powder form has good water solubility, and when dissolved in water, it can form highly viscous solutions. The viscosity of these solutions increases with the concentration of PAM and its molecular weight. PAM has a high molecular weight, often ranging from several million to tens of millions. Production Methods

This method is relatively simple and cost-effective, but it may produce PAM with lower molecular weights. Reverse emulsion polymerization involves dispersing Acrylamide- monomers in an oil phase with the help of surfactants. Polymerization occurs within water-in-oil droplets, resulting in PAM with higher molecular weights and better performance. This method is more complex and costly but yields high-quality products.
Storage Methods
PAM should be stored in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated environment. The powder form should be kept in sealed containers to prevent moisture absorption, which can cause caking and reduce its effectiveness. Liquid PAM should be stored in corrosion-resistant containers to avoid degradation due to contact with reactive substances. The storage temperature should be maintained between 5°C and 30°C to prevent thermal degradation.
