Polyaluminum chloride (PAC) is a widely used inorganic polymer coagulant known for its high efficiency and versatility in water treatment. It is a water-soluble inorganic polymer compound that lies between aluminum chloride (AlCl3) and aluminum hydroxide (Al(OH)3). The chemical formula of PAC is typically represented as Al2Cln(OH)6-n, where n is a number between 1 and 5, and m represents the degree of polymerization.
Chemical Properties
• Appearance: Liquid PAC is a pale yellow to brownish-yellow suspension, while solid PAC is a pale yellow to orange-yellow crystalline powder.
• Solubility: Highly soluble in water, with rapid hydrolysis that leads to coagulation, adsorption, and precipitation.
• pH Range: Effective over a broad pH range (typically 5-9), with minimal impact on the pH of treated water.
• Stability: Stable at room temperature but decomposes at high temperatures (above 110°C), releasing hydrogen chloride (HCl) gas.
