Appearance: The material presents itself in two manifestations: either as colorless cubic crystals or as a white powder. The crystals possess a symmetrical structure, looking pure and uniform. Under normal storage conditions, it maintains a high level of stability. Over an extended period, there are no indications of degradation or any chemical alterations taking place.
Solubility: This substance shows high solubility in water. When it dissolves, it absorbs heat from the surroundings, which means the dissolution process is endothermic. After dissolution, the phosphate ions in the substance undergo hydrolysis with water. This hydrolysis reaction produces hydroxide ions. As a result, the aqueous solution becomes alkaline and the pH value of the solution increases.
Melting Point and Density: This substance exhibits a relatively low melting point, spanning from 73.4 to 76.7 ºC, with a density of approximately 1.62g/cm³. The physical state of this substance varies in response to temperature alterations. For instance, upon heating, it undergoes a process where the water molecules present in its crystal structure (crystal water) are lost. This loss of crystal water can bring about substantial changes to both its chemical and physical characteristics.

Application
Trisodium phosphate, an essential builder, can chelate with metal ions in water. This chelation action effectively decreases water hardness. The reduction in hardness facilitates surfactants in detergents to operate more efficiently. It substantially increases the emulsifying capacity, breaking down oil stains into minuscule droplets that are readily dispersed in water. In the same way, it heightens the dispersing power for dirt particles, preventing their redeposition on surfaces. Altogether, these combined effects result in a notable enhancement of the washing performance.
Industrial water typically contains a large number of metal ions such as calcium and magnesium. Trisodium phosphate can engage in a reaction with these ions. Through this chemical reaction, insoluble precipitates-calcium phosphate and magnesium phosphate-are produced. Consequently, the hardness of the water is reduced, and the occurrence of scale formation in facilities such as pipes and boilers is prevented.
In the pretreatment stage of cotton fabric, trisodium phosphate is crucial in the scouring process. It is able to remove the natural contaminants along with the oils and waxes that cling to the cotton fibers. This removal action not only boosts the whiteness level of the cotton fabric but also greatly enhances its ability to absorb water.
