Recovery from Industrial Processes: One of the main production routes for ammonium sulfate is as a by - product of various industrial operations. For instance, in the coking industry, when coal is processed to produce coke, NH3 - containing gases are released. These gases can be captured and reacted with sulfuric acid (H2SO4) to form ammonium sulfate. Similarly, in some chemical manufacturing processes where NH3 - related reactions occur, the excess NH3 can be combined with sulfuric acid to produce ammonium sulfate. This recovery method not only makes use of waste materials but also provides a valuable chemical product.
Direct Synthesis: Ammonium sulfate can also be produced through direct synthesis. NH3 gas and sulfuric acid are reacted directly in a carefully controlled environment. The reaction is highly exothermic, and proper safety measures are required to handle the heat release and the corrosive nature of sulfuric acid. The resulting solution is then evaporated and crystallized to obtain solid ammonium sulfate.
