It can promote the cross-linking reaction between rubber molecules and accelerate the vulcanization speed of rubber. In the processing of natural rubber and synthetic rubber, sodium metabisulfite is used in combination with other vulcanization accelerators, which can optimize the vulcanization process of rubber and improve the physical properties of rubber products, such as hardness, elasticity, and wear resistance. Moreover, using sodium metabisulfite can also shorten the vulcanization time of rubber and improve the efficiency of rubber production.

In the printing and dyeing industry, sodium metabisulfite is a commonly used bleaching agent. For natural fiber fabrics such as cotton, linen, and silk, it can effectively remove natural pigments and impurities on the fabric and achieve bleaching effects. During the bleaching process, sodium metabisulfite converts colored substances on the fabric into colorless or light-colored compounds through reduction. For example, when bleaching cotton fabric, it can destroy the chromophore group in pigment molecules and make the fabric white. Moreover, compared with some strong oxidizing bleaching agents, sodium metabisulfite causes relatively less damage to the fabric.
