1. Chemical Composition
    Fumed silica, also known as pyrogenic silica, has the chemical formula SiO2. It is composed of extremely fine - grained, amorphous (non - crystalline) silica particles.
2. Production Method
    It is produced by vapor - phase hydrolysis of SiCl4 in a hydrogen - oxygen flame. The reaction is as follows: SiCl4+2H2+O2→SiO2+4HCl. This high - temperature process leads to the formation of very small, spherical particles.
3. Physical Properties
    Particle Size: Fumed silica has very small particle sizes, typically in the range of 7 - 40 nanometers.
    Surface Area: It has a very high surface area, usually ranging from 100 to 400 square meters per gram.
    Porosity: The particles have a low porosity due to their dense structure.
4. Chemical Properties
    Inertness: It is chemically inert, meaning it does not readily react with other substances under normal conditions.
    Hydrophilic or Hydrophobic: It can be either hydrophilic (attracts water) or hydrophobic (repels water) depending on the surface treatment. Hydrophobic fumed silica is often produced by treating the surface with organosilanes.
