Calcium carbonate, an inorganic compound with the chemical formula CaCO3, is one of the most abundant substances on Earth. It exists in rocks such as limestone and marble, and forms the primary component of the hard structures in many organisms, including shells and coral skeletons.
In terms of physical properties, calcium carbonate is a white, tasteless, and odorless solid. It occurs in various crystalline forms, with calcite and aragonite being particularly common. Calcite crystallizes in the trigonal crystal system, typically exhibiting a rhombohedral shape. Aragonite, conversely, belongs to the orthorhombic crystal system, and its crystals often appear in columnar or acicular forms. The density of calcium carbonate varies slightly depending on its crystal form, generally ranging between approximately 2.7-2.9 g/cm³. It has a moderate hardness, measuring around 3 on the Mohs scale.
