Magnesium sulfate heptahydrate, also known as sulphobitter, bitter salt, cathartic salt, Epsom salt, chemical formula MgSO4·7H2O), is a white or colorless acicular or oblique columnar crystal, odorless, cool and slightly bitter. After heat decomposition, the crystal water is gradually removed to anhydrous magnesium sulfate.
1. Chemical Properties:
• Solubility: Magnesium sulfate heptahydrate is highly soluble in water, with its solubility increasing as the temperature rises. At 20°C, its solubility is approximately 35.5 g/100 mL of water.
• Stability: It is relatively stable at room temperature but gradually loses its water of crystallization at high temperatures, converting to anhydrous magnesium sulfate (MgSO4).
• Acidity/Alkalinity: A solution of magnesium sulfate is weakly acidic, with a pH value of around 5.5-6.5.
2. Physical Properties:
• Appearance: Typically appears as a white crystalline powder or granules, with a fine texture, odorless, and has a bitter taste.
• Density: Approximately 1.68 g/cm³ (at 25°C).
• Melting Point: Around 1124°C (when losing its water of crystallization).
• Boiling Point: 330°C (at 760 mmHg).
• Vapor Pressure: Less than 0.1 mm Hg (at 20°C).
• Vapor Density: Less than 0.01 (relative to air).
